Hospitality & Volunteer Coordination Committee

The Hospitality and Volunteer Committee ensures that all families and guardians of Open School students feel welcomed and included in our community.

The Committee is specifically responsible for several events during the year, including the Back-to-School Picnic, Tours for Prospective Parents, and Teacher/Staff and Volunteer Appreciation. Other ongoing committee responsibilities include: supporting student-initiated community service projects; organizing a mentor program for new families; providing refreshments at various school events; conducting school tours for visitors and special guests; acknowledging life cycle events of school families and staff; and involving students in charitable service activities in the larger community.

Open Hearts, our school's community service club, is organized under the auspices of the Hospitality and Volunteer Coordination Committee.  Under the guidance of committee staff, Open Hearts students volunteer their services in a creative, age-appropriate way in support of various social causes.  Through Open Hearts our students learn about various social issues in our community, and how to educate their peers about the same.  The plan how they will support various initiatives, and work to execute those plans in a successful manner.  The Club empowers our students with the knowledge that every person, no matter how young, can make a difference for the better in our world.

In the past Open Hearts has collected and donated candy to troops who are overseas via Operation Gratitude, created placemats that were delivered along with the Thanksgiving meals to Culver City's Meals on Wheels participants, assembled and donated 40 Welcome Kits and over 100 toothbrushes to Covenant House California, and raised funds for the LA Animal Services' Kennel Sponsorship Program, which paid for food and shelter for a small animal for one full year.  Open Hearts collects old crayons year round to donate to The Crayon Initiative and is an ongoing supporter of The Friends of Ballona Wetlands, for which it publicizes local events that support the Wetlands and participates regularly in clean up days.

The Breakfast in Class program has food leftover every day.  Last year, when Open School student Luiza F. of Purple Cluster realized that these uneaten servings were going to waste, she worked with her mom Julie, to get approval for our school to donate the leftovers to the LAX Food Pantry, a food bank in Inglewood that gives to the needy.
