Growing With green - September 6, 2016

We enjoyed seeing so many of you at Back To School Night on Tuesday.  We hope that you are excited about the upcoming year and that we were able to answer any questions that you may have had.

Last week we all received our utility boxes with supplies and our own labeled bins.  We also began handwriting to learn how to correctly form our letters and we learned how to correctly hold our pencils using an orthopedic grip.  We say, “Put your thumb on the star and pinch.”

During Calendar we have extended the AB pattern, ways to count by 1s, 2s and 5s, 10s and palindromes.  We are learning to create both horizontal equations and learning about the tens and ones place.  We are also learning about expanded notation.  We learned to create our own AB patterns and are doing math activities with patterns.  We made a boy/girl graph and discovered that we have 2 more boys than girls in our class.

We finished assessing all of the children using the Zamorano Reading Assessment and are forming our reading groups. For the next two shortened weeks, we will be sorting and graphing apples.  We will learn about apples - varieties, how they grow and other interesting facts.  What do all plants need in order to grow?  At the end of the week, ask your child about the little red house that has no windows, no doors, a chimney and a star inside. If you have not yet done so, please send in your apple along with the paper listing the varieties of apples and the one that you chose.

A great big thank you to our wonderful Green Cluster Room Parents:  Shachar (Khai), and Dede (Larkin). Monesha (Myla) will also be a helper.

Here are some activities you can do with your child to reinforce what we are learning in class:
- Tell your parents about some of the “apple” activities that we did in class.  What are some of the varieties that Green Cluster kids brought in to share?  How did we sort the apples?
- Grab some different kinds of food (ie: fruits and vegetables).  Sort them in different ways.
- What other items in your house can you sort?
- Practice the AB pattern with your child.
- See the attached sheet.
As always, read to your child and talk about the story.
