Growing With Green - January 9, 2017

We hope that you all had a wonderful Winter Break.  We are looking forward to an exciting 2017 in Green Cluster!  This week we will be starting a new Writing Workshop unit.  We will begin writing “Label Booklets.”  We are continuing our homogeneous reading groups in both literature, phonics and whole language development.  The children are making a lot of progress and expanding their sight word vocabulary.  They are becoming more familiar with using their book as a resource and learning to sound out words using their word attack skills.  We will be working on forming the letter “Jj and Kk.”  We are learning the sounds of “j”  and “k.” “J is for Johnny Jellyfish”  and “K is for Katie Kangaroo.” We are learning the sight words “on” and “they.”

We will no longer be having “Sharing Day” on Fridays. Due to mandated P.E. minutes, we will be using that time for physical activity. The students will have many opportunities to share their ideas during Writing Workshop and other activities.

We have some exciting activities that will be coming up right around the corner:  On January 31st, we will be celebrating Open School Day. It is a day to celebrate our diverse community. On Tuesday, February 7, is the 100th Day of School. On Tuesday, February 14, will have our Valentine’s Day Party. More information to follow on all of these exciting events.

A special SHOUT OUT to DeeDee Li (Larkin’s mom), Miye Bennett (Arlo’s mom), and Shachar Pangindian (Khai’s mom) for organizing such a wonderful holiday/ birthday party, and for taking care of us all year long!  How did we get so lucky??  :)  As always, we thank all of you who come in to help us by volunteering in the classroom and in the school community.  You all have such an impact on the richness of our educational program.

Need your help:

We will be incorporating elements of Reader’s Workshop in our program and we would love some help in leveling the books in the Green Cluster library. We will be using the Scholastic Book Wizard or  Lit Leveler app to scan the books, otherwise looking them up on the Scholastics website. Come SCAN if you CAN! = )

Here are some activities you can do with your child to reinforce what we are learning in class:
- What is the sound of “j” and “k”?  Look around you and find 5 things that begin with each sound.
- Practice writing the numbers 5, 6, and 7.  Think of different ways to make 7.  See the attached sheet.

Have a good week!
