Growing With Green - January 17, 2017

Last week we started writing “Label Booklets” during Writing Workshop.  We are learning to pick topics/ themes and then add details.  Some of the children’s interesting themes were:  Places I Like to go With my Family, and My Favorite Sports.

We introduced math packets in guided groups. The children are already working independently on them. The children will begin with number awareness, counting, ordinal numbers and simple addition.  As the packets progress, the math concepts and problems continue to become more complex.  They will work individually on these packets during their free time for the rest of the year. Whenever they finish a math packet, we send it home and then they receive the next level packet. The children are very enthusiastic about doing math.

This week we will be learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a true American Hero. We will be working on the sound of the letter “Ll.”   “L is for Lizzie Lizard.”  We are learning the sight word “are.”

We are very excited about Open School Day on Tuesday, January 31.  See the attached letter for this wonderful event and return the tear-off as soon as possible.

A BIG SPECIAL SHOUT OUT AND THANK YOU to Felix Aison’s family, and Bella De La Rosa’s family for buying, building, and mounting 48 shiny new hooks outside of Green Cluster!! The children have been excited about hanging up their backpacks and jackets outside.  It looks so much neater and helps the children stay organized. We, the teachers, are extremely grateful to these two families! = )

Here are some activities you can do with your child to reinforce what we are learning in class:
- Read the poem, “Dreams,” by Langston Hughes with your child.  Talk  about why dreams are important.  Do you have a special dream?  What ideas do you have to make the world a better place?
- What is the sound of “l”?  Look around you and find 5 things that begin with the sound of  “l”.
- Practice writing the number 8.  Think of different ways to make 8.  See the attached sheets.

***Read the letter about Open School Day and please consider coming in to volunteer on that day.  It is such a wonderful community-building day!
