Classroom News

We have a busy week this week, so here’s what you need to remember:

The Object Parade is Wednesday.  We have one show at 9:15 and one at 11:30.  We hope everyone can make it to one of the shows.  If you are available to come to one show and to help at the other, please let us know.  We need a couple of extra adults at each show to help the students on and off stage and with putting their costumes on.  We send DVD / BluRay order forms home on Monday, taped to progress reports, so if you want to order a wonderfully, and professionally, filmed movie, please return that form.  

Our Riley’s Farm trip is on Thursday, March 30th.  We’ll be sending home carpool lists later, but here’s what you need to know / remember:

  • Students and drivers need to be at school by 7:15 am so we can leave early enough to get there on time.
  • Please have your children wear their Yellow Cluster shirts.  Watch the weather to see what kinds of layers are appropriate (it’s in Oak Glen).
  • Each student should have a snack and a lunch.  They also need a drink.  There are water fountains, but they aren’t necessarily convenient, so a water bottle is a great idea.
  • If you haven’t yet sent in a trip slip, a permission to ride in a private vehicle form, and/or your donation (if possible) for the trip, please do so on Monday.
  • If you’re driving, we need your car insurance form (unless you drove to the Metro Rail earlier).  Any adult attending does need to pay for his/her admission.  ($18-20 per person, cash or checks made payable to Friends of the Open School.
  • For the adults coming on the trip, Riley’s Farm has a wonderful bake shop from which you can order bread and delicious apple and chicken pot pies.  They make them that day and you can take them home at the end of the trip.  Due to our large numbers, they have asked that our parents order online the night before.  The pies will still be made the day of the trip, but this gives them a much better sense of the numbers, in ingredients and staff and time, of what they will need to do.  You can still order that day, but the more of us who order online ahead of time, the more likely it is that everything is actually ready on time.  The food is delicious, so we recommend placing an order!  To do this, go to rileysfarm.com and click on the store button in the upper right hand corner.  From there, navigate to the bakery.  When you place your order, there will be a place to write the pickup date (March 30th) and to say that you’re with Open School.
  • Have a plan for picking up your child at school.  We estimate arriving between 4 and 4:30.  Once you have your carpool assignment, you can check in with the driver about plans for pick up.
  • It is a long drive, so we are okay with books, cards, and electronic devices being brought to help pass the time.  Everything brought, with the exception of lunches, is to be left in the cars.

Remember that there is no school on Friday, March 31st.

We realized recently that we never put into the weekly news the information that we have a student teacher.  We’re guessing many of your children told you about her, but her name is Ms. Allison (yes, now we have two) and she’s been doing a wonderful job developing relationships with our students and beginning to plan and teach lessons under our guidance. We feel really lucky to have her and the students have been enjoying her as well.

Homework

Scholastic News:  This week’s story is about a boy who sometimes uses a robot to go to school for him when he can’t.  The students will be using a cause/effect map to read for why he has the robot and what it does for him.  The magazine and map are due on Tuesday, 3/28. 

Problem of the Week:  The new problem is about figuring out a special number that fits certain rules.  It’s going to take some patience, perseverance, trial and error and analysis of results to get correct, so please encourage your child accordingly.  It’s due on Tuesday, 3/28.  

Word Study:  There won’t be any new word study homework until after Spring Break.
