Why I Serve - Governing Council

As an eleven year stretch as parent of an Open School student comes to a close, is it weird to say that I'm going to miss Governing Council? Because I think I'm going to.

I've served on GC for different reasons over the years, but ultimately it was because I was able to, and because I was allowed to. Thank you for that, not only because I got to see up-close how Open School operates, but because it provided an interesting perspective to watch it grow as both a school and a community. Working with Open community members to ensure the students' best interests are being met has been rewarding, and many of my colleagues have and continue to inspire.

In addition to its community, I also admire Open as an organization, and appreciate the transparency with which it conducts business. It is a unique school, with a somewhat unique decision-making body.

The Governing Council is a partnership, comprised of an equal number of
parent/guardian representatives and faculty/admin representatives.

Every year there are several vacancies to fill via the upcoming GC elections, and time is running out to submit an application (due by April 8). I urge you to take advantage of this opportunity to help run the school.

It was a privilege and a pleasure to have done so, and I will miss it.
