Growing With Green - August 29, 2016

We have finished assessing all of your children through the Zamorano Reading Assessment.  We are organizing homogeneous reading groups and will soon begin our whole language, phonics and literature groups. During Calendar, we are working on extending the AB pattern, learning to count by 1s, 2s and 5s, and learning to recognize both odd and even numbers.  We are continuing to work on tally marks, ordinal numbers, number sequences, equations and place value.  The children are learning to play cooperatively and “share” by taking turns with the  building and play materials.  We are working on “using our words” to resolve conflicts and also using “inside voices“ during free time.
We will be separating the class into two sides, “The Giraffes” and “The Zebras,” by the end of the week.  The sides are only for purposes of placing their snacks into the Snack Bin and for going to Art, P.E. and the Library on Fridays.  Fridays are also “Sharing Day.”  On Fridays we will not have Calendar, and instead, the children will be allowed to bring in one thing from home that we can all learn from.  We will give you more information at Back to School Night.

Back To School Night is on Tuesday, August 30, from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm.  We are looking forward to seeing all of you to tell you about our plans for the year in Green Cluster.  BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT IS FOR ADULTS ONLY.  PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANY CHILDREN.  THERE WILL NOT BE ANY CHILD CARE AVAILABLE.

Here are some activities you can do with your child to reinforce what we are learning in class:

- Next week (Week of September 6) we will begin our unit on apples.  Please go to the market sometime this week or on the weekend with your child and look at the various varieties of apples.  Please list six kinds of apples that you see at the market.  Write them down on the attached paper and send in JUST ONE APPLE FOR OUR APPLE ACTIVITIES.  Please label the apple with your child’s name and send in the both the sheet and the apple.
- Practice the AB pattern with your child.  See if you can discover patterns on clothes, buildings, etc while you are out and about in the city.
- Practice counting objects around your environment.
- Read to your child and talk about the story.  What do you think will happen next?  What is the story about?

***ST Math: It will be a few weeks before the children have completed their full passwords and be able to log on to ST Math at home. We will keep you updated as to when and how to log on.

Enjoy the week!

Please remember to separate your child’s snack and lunch and label them both with your child’s name.  It is time consuming for us to have to separate the snacks, put them in a paper bag and label them each day. Also please remember to keep your lunch money account current.
