Growing With Green - September 12, 2016

This week we are continuing our “apple” activities.  We will make a class “Apple Graph”  with the varieties of apples that the students brought in.  We will be learning about how apples grow, other facts and creating a little booklet.  Ask your child about the little red house that has no windows, no doors, a chimney and a star inside.

In Math we will continue sorting activities using different objects (shoes, buttons and barrettes).  We will also be extending our knowledge of patterns from the AB to the AAB.  We are continuing to work on place value (tens and ones), expanded notation, counting, and both horizontal and vertical equations.

All of the students have been learning their individual passwords for ST Math.  The passwords are only known to the students, so we do not have any records of their individual passwords.  They are able to work on the school computers, but the students have to reach a certain critical level in order to login at home.  Up until that time, they will continue to work on the computers and iPads at school.

We are working on forming the letter “Aa.”  The capital letter is like “the top of a witches‘ hat” and takes up the entire “handwriting road.”  The lower case letter is smaller and goes around counter clockwise in a circle.  Close the circle and bring the stem down.  We are also learning the short sound of “a.”  “A is for Allie Alligator.”  We are learning the sight word “the.”

Thank you to all of the wonderful parents who came in to volunteer this week.  Thank you for your help cleaning tables, setting up breakfast and helping in the classroom. We really couldn’t do it without you!!!  We are looking forward to the fabulous Campout on September 24!   :)

Here are some activities you can do with your child to reinforce what we are learning in class:

-Look around your house for some objects.  Create 2 circles for the sets.  Sort the objects into the two circles.  Have your child explain how he or she sorted (ie: by size, color, usage, etc).
- Practice the AB pattern and the AAB.  Find objects around your house and create your own AABpattern (ie:  book-book-leaf).
- What is the short sound of “a”?  Look around you and find 5 things that begin with the short “a” sound.
- Read a book to your child and talk about the story.
