Growing With Green - October 31, 2016

Last week we continued reading our sight word booklets and core literature selections. The children have been enjoying whole language books from the Wright Group series and using their books as a resource for their writing follow ups.

The children have been very successful with Writing Workshop. This week we modeled how authors are inspired to write new stories by thinking of special places they’ve been to. Our student authors/ illustrators are so excited to create their own writing pieces.

This week we will continue with “Turkey Math Addition” where they have been solving simple math equations. We will be working on forming the letter “Gg.”  We are learning the hard sound of “g.”  “G is for Gordo Gorilla.”  We are learning the sight words “I” and “it.”

Our Halloween Party was a smashing success!  A special thank you to Deedee, Shachar, and their team for organizing such a spectacular event!  Our activities included pumpkin decorating, cookie decorating, slime monsters, caramel apples, and story time. Add to that trick-or-treating at stations on Green Yard. Thank you to all of the wonderful families for sending in so many goodies, coming in to run the activities and trick-or-treat stations.  We couldn’t have done it without you!  Thank you to the many families that sent in so many gorgeous and magical pumpkins! WE DO NOT NEED ANYMORE PUMPKINS!!

Here are some activities you can do with your child tom reinforce what we are learning in class:
- Have your child look through their Halloween treats.  Have them sort their treats in creative and clever ways.  See the attached worksheet.
- Read a book to your child and have him/her retell the story.  Can they count across their fingers and find at least five elements in the story?
- What is the sound of “g”?  Look around you and find 5 things that begin with the hard sound of  “g”.  “G is for Gordo Gorilla.”
- Practice writing the number 4.

Again, homework is always optional.   Have a good week!
