Open School Day

Open School Day is coming soon!  The Open School will be celebrating Open School Day: A Celebration of Culture and Family on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. Each year we dedicate a day to sharing and celebrating the many cultures and families represented in our school.  We are striving to create a deeper sense of community amongst the students, parents and staff.

On Open School Day, the teachers hand over leadership of the classroom to those who know your family cultures and traditions best - YOU!  So we need about six willing parents to come and lead small groups of students throughout the day (8:30am-12:15pm) in activities that share and tell about your family traditions.  You may share  a story, a craft, a song, or anything else that expresses a family tradition.  We plan on having several stations around the room that children will rotate through in order to participate in every activity.  In the past, parents have taught the kids to make latkes, ornaments, sushi, and dreidels, to name a few.  Students have also enjoyed learning how to play a Korean drum, Brazilian capoeira, and many other cultural games and activities.

We will also have a multicultural feast on this day, and are requesting that students bring a food dish to share.  The dishes will be another way to share a part of your family’s heritage.

We hope you will want to share something with us this year!  We would love for as many of our students’ cultures and traditions to be represented and celebrated during what we are sure will be an Open School Day to remember.

Look for the email soon which will include a link to a Sign-up Genius for parent facilitators of our activity rotations, food contributions, and help with set up and clean up.  Please come and join us!! Sign up and let us know how you would like to participate on this day.  We look forward to spending a fun and busy day learning about each other!

Flat Stanley Project Update

I am sure that some of your Flat People are starting to return home after their long journeys and had some pretty exciting experiences.  Next week, we will be checking in with your child about scheduling a date for their February presentations.  Once we have a date scheduled, we will send that home as well the Presentation Guidelines so that your child can prepare to share where their Flat Person has been.

Spelling City Homework

I just wanted to apologize about the Spelling City homework.  I never put the assignment in and didn’t realize it until today.  We will for sure be up and running for next week.
