Classroom News

Hopefully your child gave you a top secret, for parents’ eyes only note on Thursday.  If not, please ask him/her to get it out of his/her yellow folder.  In summary, we make notepads as a holiday gift for each child using art each student drew on the computer.  Since the notepads make great presents for other relatives, we give everyone the opportunity to order more.  The paper is the order form that lists all of the possible options.  The kids don’t know that we’re doing this (except for the ones who were with us last year), so we try to keep it as much of a secret as possible.  If you’d like to order any notepads, the orders are due by Wednesday, December 6, so that we can get them made in time to get to you before winter break.  Our goal is to have them on the day of the Winter Concert so that you can pick them up then.  If you have any questions, or want to see samples, please ask.  We can also send a pdf of the ordering form via email if you need one.

As you know, we will be going to see the Hot Chocolate Nutcracker this coming Wednesday.  Your child will need to wear his/her Yellow Cluster shirt and bring a lunch, clearly labeled with his/her name.  They will be able to eat breakfast in the classroom, if they can eat quickly.  We’re going to try and let them have a quick snack before we go in, so it would be helpful if they have something small they can take out of their lunch and eat easily without having to put anything back in their lunch (like a granola bar or some other small snack).  We’ll be eating lunch there and then coming back.  We’ll be with Orange and Indigo Clusters.  If you haven’t sent in your child’s permission slip, please do so on Monday.  If your child isn’t joining us for some reason, please email us.  If he/she will be coming to school that day but not going on the trip, we can arrange for him/her to be in another classroom at make sure there is work to do, if we know in advance.

On Friday, December 8th, we’ll be doing our first real payday where students will get paychecks based on the work they’ve done and will have to write rent checks based on the size of their parcel on the landsite.  We would really, really appreciate having a bunch of extra adult help.  Our dream situation would be to have 6-8 extra adults helping.  If you can come at 1:00 on Friday, please let us know so we can plan accordingly.  We will be celebrating our November and December birthdays after payday.

Homework

Scholastic News: This week we are reading a Scholastic News about archeologists who believe they have found the original location of Plymouth, where the Pilgrims began their settlement.  The map is having the students find the evidence that supports the archeologists‘ beliefs.  This work is due on Thursday, 12/7.

Problem of the Week: This week’s problem is about flipping yoga mats in sets of 3 to ultimately turn them all over.  We recommend using actual objects to help support solving this problem - like coins that can be flipped back and forth.  Just remind your child to keep track of what he/she is doing as they work (using the back of the sheet) so it doesn’t have to be solved twice. This work is due on Thursday, 12/7.

Word Study:   Due to the short time period before winter break, we gave the same spelling list to everyone.  It’s sets of homophones (words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and mean different things).  Most of these are words that are students have no trouble spelling - they just don’t always use the right word in the right context.  So in the test, the students need to spell the correct word correctly.  So, for example, if the sentence is, “I went to the beach” and the word is to, if a student writes too or two, that will be marked wrong.  We sent home a packet for practice.  If you think your child would benefit from extra practice, let us know and we’ll send more home.   This work is due on Thursday, 12/14.

Please help your child make sure that he/she has the words to the Winter Concert songs memorized.
