Classroom News

Welcome back to school everyone!  We hope you had a restful and enjoyable holiday season.   We’re happy to be back with our wonderful Yellow Cluster students.

Please remember that there is no school on Monday, as we take the day off to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and all he did for our country.

We have an author visit this coming Friday, January 19th that we are very excited about.  Nick Bruel, who writes and illustrates the very funny Bad Kitty series, will be coming and talking to the school about writing and drawing.  Orders for signed books (with an illustration and his name rather than personalized) are due on Tuesday.  Once again, we are being given so many author visits due to the orders we receive, so we are very grateful for your purchases.  We hope we get your support again this time as well.

We are getting ready to start our next extended science unit on electricity.  We began by learning about atoms, as electricity is the flow of electrons.  We also looked briefly at the periodic table of elements and talked about how atoms combine to form molecules.  This is a fascinating topic, that is very abstract, but there was a great deal of interest.  From here we will move on to experimenting with, and learning about, static electricity and then transition to electrical currents and other related topics.  Ultimately, we plan on creating electric circuits to light up buildings in our city.  We’ve done this a couple of times before and are still working on trying to figure out the best way to do this, so if anyone has any knowledge or experience that might help us figure it out, please let us know.

We need you! Open School Day is coming up soon (Tuesday, January 30) and we will need a lot of volunteers.  We need people to lead rotations, someone to coordinate the feast, and people to bring food for the feast, as well as set up and clean up.  We will be sending home a sign up sheet on Tuesday which we hope you will fill out and send back as soon as possible.  If you can coordinate the feast or lead or a rotation, please email us so we can start setting up a schedule and know that we are covered for the day.

Scholastic News: This week we’re reading about Dr. King and doing a map that asks the students to find evidence in each section as to why the subheading of the section fits it. Please encourage and support your child in doing some quality thinking about this, as it is helping to develop an important skill.  This work is due on Thursday, 1/18.

Problem of the Week: This week’s problem is really about careful reading and thinking.  Please encourage your child to think carefully and double check his/her answer with the facts given in the problem to make sure the answer actually matches the facts given.  This work is due on Thursday, 1/18.

Word Study:   We’re sorry for any possible confusion, but the word study homework was changed from when the assignment sheet was created.  Rather than half of the class getting word study homework, everyone was given words on Thursday.  The words are from our upcoming history unit about the 13 Colonies and the beginning of the Revolutionary War. Everyone has two weeks to do the six activities.  The test will be on the same day that the work is due -  Thursday, 1/25.
