Classroom News

Object Work: We still really need you!  Thanks to some dedicated parents, and one lovely grandmother, we’ve gotten most of our cardboard cut, but we do still have more to do.  Also, during the actual building times, we’re at a place where lots and lots of adult helpers really, really make everything work better and go faster.  We need helpers all day on Monday (9:00-10:25, 10:45-12:15, and 1:00-2:30) and Friday from 10:45-12:15, and 1:00-2:30.  We will also need helpers at other times to work the die cutting machine to cut out letters for students.  Please come!

Don’t forget that signed reading logs are due on Wednesday!  We had 100% of our logs turned in this week, so they’ve earned brownies and are now working for ice cream and ultimately a field trip to the Central Library.  The Read-a-thon Committee could also use help tallying the minutes that day.  They also passed on that it is really helpful if you add up your child’s minutes and initial the total, too.

Valentines Day is also Wednesday.  We will be passing out valentines in the morning, so if your child wants to bring valentines, that’s totally fine.  Here’s what we ask:

  • If your child brings something, he/she will need to bring 47 - one for each student (or 46 if they know to skip themselves)
  • It is easiest to pass them out if they have roll call numbers written on the front’
  • Please be sure your child doesn’t add any non-Valentine sentiments inside anyone’s card (yes, that has happened before, though thankfully not very often)

We aren’t planning a party, as there is usually more than enough sugar in the valentines themselves.

We’d like to get started making our Yellow Cluster personalized shirt for the year.  If anyone has an experience with graphic design or creating a picture from a bunch of names and is willing to help us out with making our design, we’d love some help!

Homework

Scholastic News: This week we are looking at main idea and details of the sections of the article.  The reading and paper are due on Thursday, 2/15.

Problem of the Week: This week’s problem is involves students finding, and then using, a pattern to solve a problem.  We’ve been working on patterns and rules in class, so hopefully everyone will be able to handle this problem fairly easily.  One thing that is sometimes challenging is reading the questions carefully enough to answer what is actually being asked.  This work is due on Thursday, 2/15.

Word Study:   The octagons and pentagons received their new words on Thursday.  The homework this time is slightly different for just the octagons.  Rather than do the spelling city practice (though it is available and they certainly can if they want the extra practice), they are supposed to do some research on their words to find the history of each - its origin, original meaning, the parts of the word, and how it has changed.  The homework is due on Thursday, 2/22, with their test being the same day.  The heptagons and hexagons have their work due this coming week, Thursday, 2/15.
