Classroom News

Object Work:  Thank you so much to the parents who came today to help with objects - a lot more got done with your help!  As we make our final push, we would love helpers on Monday, any time from 9:00 - 10:30, 10:45 - 12:15, and 1:00 - 2:30.  Drop in individual help is also welcome on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.  Put the Object Parade date on your calendar - April 17th, during Open House, exact time of the evening TBD.

We had some students who wanted to order Andy Griffiths books but couldn’t find their order forms.  I was able to get us an extension until Monday, so if you wanted to order any books, please send the order in on Monday.

As many of you have probably heard, there is a national walkout scheduled for this Wednesday at 10:00 for 17 minutes to honor the 17 people killed in the Parkland shooting and to show support for reasonable gun control measures to protect our students.  While we have not discussed the Parkland events with our students, many are aware of the events, and there is much discussion on the yard about the walkout.  We wanted you to know our plan of action.  On Tuesday (or Monday if the kids bring it up and we can see that they have a need to talk about it) we will be having an age-appropriate discussion about what is being planned across the nation for Wednesday, framing it as people wanting to keep kids safe in school. Our goal is not to tell the students what to think, but to give them the space and time to express themselves and develop their own thoughts and opinions around this issue, honoring everyone’s point of view.  Students who ultimately choose to participate in the walkout will not be allowed to leave the school grounds; the walkout will be to the yard.  Depending on how many students choose to go, either one or both teachers will join them to supervise.  If students choose to stay in the classroom, one of us will stay with them.  No judgements will be made by us about either choice.  If you feel strongly about your child not walking out, please let us know.

We’re still waiting to hear back from some parents about their conference appointment times.  As conferences are the week after next, we do want to be sure we’ve gotten everyone scheduled, so please let us know whether or not your time is going to work for you.

Scholastic News: This week the students are doing a two sided map.  On one side they are looking for evidence to support statements in the article and on the other side they are thinking about what statement three pieces of evidence would be supporting. The reading and map are due on Thursday, 3/15.

Problem of the Week:  Please continue to not help your child until he/she has an actual answer to the problem.  We want to encourage and support a willingness to try and to think about what they are doing.  When we went over last week’s problem on Thursday we asked the students to convince each other that their answer was correct.  Through this justification process, many students ended up changing their answers to the correct one as they were able to see what they had done incorrectly.  We told them they should be doing this for themselves every time they do a problem, as it will often help them find their mistakes sooner. The new problem is due on Thursday, 3/15.

Word Study:  All groups are working on a packet about figurative language.  Heptagons and hexagons will be turning in their packets next Thursday, 3/15.  So as to not have any homework during Spring Break, we are asking the octagons and pentagons homework to bring their finished packet and turn it in the Thursday of conference week,  3/22.
