Principal's Message: Medication Must be in the Nurse's Office

At Open School, every day counts and to support this motto, safety is our number one concern. When children are healthy and safe, they come to school daily. We cannot reiterate this point enough! We know that you entrust us daily with your most prized possessions and we take the health and well-being of all of our students to heart. Parents also play a vital role in the health and safety of their child while at school. One way you can help us is to make your child's teacher aware of any serious health concerns that your child might have. We can only help to keep them healthy if we know about any health issues.

District guidelines state that the principal and school nurse must be notified if a student with a medical or health condition requires accommodations at school. Students may not carry or use medication on campus without written consent from a licensed physician. A student who needs to take medication during school hours MUST have a permission form on file at the school, signed by a California licensed physician and the parent/guardian.  Click here for the permission form.

Please do not send medication with your child without the proper paperwork. It is imperative that you let us know if your child needs medication. When you notify us, you are not only keeping your child safe, but you are ensuring the safety of the other students as well. By keeping most medication in the Nurse's Office we are able to make sure that children only take medication meant for them. There is the rare occasion when an older student, with the correct authorization will be allowed to self-administer medication.

In addition, many children have food allergies. For this reason, we do not allow the children to share food during recess and lunch. Please remind your child that the food you send to school for them is only for them. Let them know that they can keep their schoolmates safe by not sharing food. This is one way that you can help us ensure that certain foods or ingredients do not get ingested unintentionally. We thank you for supporting our goal at Open School, which is the health and safety of all children.
