One School, One Book - Building Literacy Through Community

Hello Open School Families,

Just on the trail of the Read-a-thon we have another great literacy event! There is such a buzz of reading around Open School influenced by our children, that it is now time to get our whole community reading the same book. We are piloting the One School, One Book initiative at Open School, in which the whole community shares the same literature experience. That’s right, you read that correctly: students, parents, volunteers, and staff, our WHOLE community will be reading the same book over a four week period, from March 28th to May 2nd (excluding Spring Break).

One School, One Book will kick off on Thursday, March 28. There will be a kick-off assembly on that day and then everyone will receive their book. Please carve time out of your evening routine to enjoy this magical experience of family, literature and togetherness with your child and with the Open School community. Reading will be happening both in class and at home, and it will be a manageable amount for all age levels, but of course, our little ones will need to be read to. There will be more information to come, on March 28, but for now here is the Read to Them website for you to check out how we will join together as ONE BIG community around reading.

This also deserves a huge thank you to the Friends of Open School. It is because of the generous sponsorship by Friends of Open, that we are able to provide one book to every family. At the end of the event, we would also like to gift the books to a school in need that is focusing on boosting literacy achievement and building a bond for their community. We are so excited about this event. Building community, cherishing family time and developing a love of reading are definitely the cornerstone of Open School.

Happy reading!

Antoinette
