Open School Makes a Difference! Gorilla Adoption and Donation

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” ―Anne Frank

We recently finished The One and Only Ivan, our first “One School, One Book” experience, and what a beautiful, thought-provoking, and meaningful experience it was!  While the story was fictional, it was inspired by the true-life story of Ivan, a gorilla who lived in a similar situation for 27 years. Reading the story wasn’t always easy, but it fostered powerful discussions among our students about animal conservation. It also helped us to realize that we can do something to help!

Open School would like to “adopt” a Silverback gorilla through the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, a charity aimed at studying and protecting mountain gorillas in their natural habitats. We would like to raise money as a community so that we can help the charity continue the very important work they are doing. We need a minimum of $150 to adopt a gorilla, but we are hoping to raise much more!

What a great opportunity for our students to use what they have learned and make a positive impact in the world beyond our community here at Open.

This is optional, of course, but if you would like to donate, please return the white envelope that your child will bring home, to school with your contribution. Check (payable to Friends of Open School), cash or spare change will gladly be accepted, and no amount is too little!

Thank you for your support!
