Class News

We had our first payday today and it was a bit crazy!  Probably doing it the day after Halloween and forgetting to ask for parent help wasn’t the best plan!  But they’re starting to see the connection between doing their jobs and earning money and how doing homework and not getting fined can really help your income increase!  And how rent can take a big chunk out of your paycheck.  Showing your child your checkbook so they can see how the checks and the register are pretty much just like the ones we’re using in class would be great, as would continued conversations about how important it is to keep track of your money.  Lots of conversations also about how the cash in your wallet is separate from the money in your bank account would also be helpful, as many of them keep wanting to keep track of their cash in their checkbook register.  :)

Our first skillsheet due date is next Friday, November 8th.  We have a handful of students who have already met their due date, and a large group that are pretty close, but we also have quite a few students who are much more behind.  We individually told each student who hadn’t yet met his/her due date to put their skillsheets in their mailboxes and to work on them this weekend.  We asked for every student who took their skillsheets home today to come back on Monday with them completed, as that will go a long way to getting most of them where they need to be.  Please check with your child about his/her skillsheets (if you still have it, you could look at the skillsheet letter we sent home awhile ago) and support any necessary work time.

If you have a bunch of unwanted or unneeded candy sitting at home, remember that Monday is the last day for the kids to bring it in to school to donate it and have it sent to our soldiers.  Right now our box is sadly empty.

Scholastic News: This week the students are reading about the fires in the Amazon and focusing on how text features help them understand an article.  The magazine and map are due on November 8th.

Problem of the Week:  This week’s problem is about taking the numbers from 0 to 20 and arranging them in groups of 3 so that when you add the 3 digits up, you get 7 consecutive numbers from those 7 sets.  We spent a lot of time discussing it today in class, so hopefully they understand the process.  There were LOTS of questions. It’s due on November 8th.
