Open School is Listening: Safety is our Top Priority

Open School is Listening is a segment of Thursday's Backpack that will be published monthly to address some of the information gathered from our May 2019 Program Evaluation Survey. Our program evaluation survey from May 2019 was full of accolades and kudos for our entire school, but there were also opportunities and ideas for improvement and clearer communication.

Safety came up in the survey as a rightful concern that we all take very seriously. When it comes to safety, Open School is serious and makes this our top priority, for we cannot learn or be happy, if we are not safe. With that being said, safety is such a broad term. So these are some of the ways in which we put safety at the top of our list:

  • We encourage our community to say something, if they see something. If it doesn’t seem quite right, please let a staff member know.
  • We have a secure campus, with only one entrance and exit during the school day.
  • We practice safety drills, including earthquake, fire, lockdown and shelter in place drills.
  • We follow all doctors’ orders for students who have them on file. We also follow all medication regimens for students who have medical authorization to take medicine at school.
  • We have a diligent practice of informing parents when a student has an injury that is out of the ordinary.
  • We have safe practices getting students to and from school, including procedures for our valet service and the buses.
  • We also make sure that students are continuously supervised.

In addition to this, Governing Council reviews requests or concerns brought forward by parents. In this regard, in the January 23rd, 2020 Governing Council meeting, we will continue discussing ways to make Open School more secure. If you are interested in being a part of the conversation, please join us at 5:30 p.m. in the Teachers’ Lounge.
